Adding air to tire

What Does TPMS Mean?

TPMS is short for Tire Pressure Monitoring System. Most new vehicles have one nowadays, including the new vehicles at Premier Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram FIAT. Still, you might wonder what the letters TPMS mean when they appear on your vehicle’s dashboard! (You might also see the “Tire PSI,” or a symbol that looks like a flat tire with an exclamation mark.) No matter what you see on the dash, your TPMS is probably just trying to tell you that one or more of your tires has low pressure.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System Features

Ok, you’ve got the basics, but what does TPMS mean, exactly? Generally, the light will come on if the air pressure in one or more of your tires is at least 25% below the recommended level. In certain systems, a red or flashing TPMS light indicates a more severe issue, a rapid loss of pressure.

Why should you pay attention to your tire pressure monitoring system? Simply put, your tires are some of the most important safety features on your vehicle. Low pressure can lead to:

  • Reduced traction
  • Slower braking and acceleration
  • Accelerated tire wear
  • Increased risk of flats or blowouts
  • Reduced fuel economy

Benefits of Proper Tire Inflation

Keep in mind that overinflated tires come with their own set of risks. If you’re hoping to maximize the lifespan of your tires and enjoy superior control as you drive through Slidell and Metairie, make sure to take these steps:

  • Check your owner’s manual to find the recommended tire air pressure.
  • Check the PSI of each tire on a monthly basis.

You can refill your tires at most gas stations and service centers. If you just need a little air, a bike pump can work in a pinch. If you take good care of your tires, you’ll enjoy each of the following benefits:

  • Longer-lasting tires due to decreased tread movement
  • Superior control in poor conditions due to a decreased risk of hydroplaning
  • Higher fuel economy due to decreased rolling resistance
