The Proper Way to Jump-Start a Car

If you need to jump-start car battery, the first thing you’ll need is a set of jumper cables and another vehicle. AAA provides a jump-start car service if you can’t find another driver able to help. Once you have both the jumper cables and another vehicle, follow the steps below:

  1. Park the car with the working battery facing the car that needs jumping. Make sure that the bad battery vehicle is off. Make sure that parking brakes are engaged in both vehicles.
  2. Pop the hood of both vehicles and locate their batteries. You must remove the plastic hoods to expose each battery terminal.
  3. Determine the positive and negative terminals and make sure they’re clean and clear of corrosion.
  4. Connect the red clamp to the positive terminal of the dead battery.
  5. Uncoil the battery cable and attach the red clamp to the car battery with a charge.
  6. Attach the black clamp to the negative terminal of the car with a charge.
  7. The final clamp connects to the unpainted metal surface of the vehicle’s frame.
  8. Once the cables are hooked up, start the engine of the car with the good battery and then the one with the bad battery.
  9. After you’ve jump-started the dead battery, remove the jumper cables in reverse order to the way you put them on. Then turn off the car that helped jump-start your car.
  10. Keep the engine of the bad battery car on for at least ten minutes to ensure the battery doesn’t die again.
